What is a herbalist?

A medical herbalist (phytotherapist) is a qualified practitioner who is trained in the long established tradition of herbal medicine. Phytotherapists combine the same diagnostic skills taught to GPs, with a holistic understanding of the human body in order to bring about healing and long-lasting changes to help support and nourish the body and mind. In many cultures today, herbalists are often regarded as the physicians that help hold the community together to prevent illness and dis-ease.

What is herbal medicine?

Herbal medicine is a time-honoured traditional practice that is used by most of the world’s population, and has been the original form of medicine known to us. It is the use of whole plants, seeds, roots, berries, flowers and barks to create a unique remedy that is specific to your body, constitution and health needs. The traditional uses of plants are continually being backed up by modern scientific research.

Safe, effective & long lasting

Most herbs are safe enough to be used long-term without side effects. They can be used in acute ailments to bring about immediate relief, and can also be used daily to help support the body through times of stress to build up resilience and vitality. The effects are long lasting and much like consuming foods, herbs help nourish and support the body through different stages of life.

Can herbs be used with medications?

Absolutely yes! The majority of herbs are safe to use with medication and in many cases help mitigate the side effects synthetic drugs can have on the liver.

In certain cases however, they may have adverse effects when used alongside drugs. For example, when garlic is used medicinally alongside Warfarin to reduce blood clotting. This could potentiate the blood thinning effects of Warfarin. Qualified medical herbalists are aware of potential interactions or side effects and choose herbs that can be taken safely.
